Urban Bike: Penny Farthing Race

Monday, April 16th, 2012 at 1:04pm. 266 Views, 0 Comments.

Bike Month continues.

I've always had a soft spot for the Penny Farthing bike, but never though to it as a race bike, until I saw this rather exciting video of such a race. The race starts at about 1:15.

Wall Murals On McDowell

Sunday, April 1st, 2012 at 5:31pm. 262 Views, 0 Comments.

I took a bunch of photos of murals on Roosevelt Row about a week ago on that urban bike tour. These murals below I took an a short bike ride a few days ago. These murals are just West of Central on McDowell Rd. There are a few more then this, but these are the more interesting one.

Murals On McDowell

During April, which is Bike Month, and before it gets too warm I'm going to get a lot of riding in, much of which will include taking photos.

Urban Bike - The Good Ride Into Roosevelt Row - Graphx Edition

Sunday, March 25th, 2012 at 8:59am. 486 Views, 0 Comments.

Urban Phoenix or really anything from uptown to downtown Phoenix is an area rich in diversity and is quickly getting gentrified with all the stages in-between. One of thoes gentrifying signals is the creative community. Roosevelt Row somewhere along Roosevelt between Central Avenue and 7th Street is commonly know for First Fridays and Third Fridays. This is one of those creative communities.

In recent years these wall murals - seen below - have become a staple of this little village. What they remind me of is advertising murals from Poland which used to cover large multistory buildings, sometimes up to 15 stories or more high, all painted, not printed. These advertised a play, and new theater show or a popular state brand.

The photos below are a

Urban Bike: Short and Wet

Saturday, August 7th, 2010 at 8:13am. 101 Views, 0 Comments.

A planned 3-4 hour Central Phoenix cycling tour was put to a quick stop.I left the base a little bit apprehensive about today's trip, but often the clouds looming in the Phoenix sky do just that, only loom, but today they also dropped lots of rain which I was to intersect. At one point all was dry, maybe only a little wet from the night showers, but all at once like hitting a wall or more like falling in a pool the wet hit me.  Soaked and barely able to see through the spotted glasses a decision was made to trim the trip to one only around the Phoenix Mountains, especially after hearing and seeing thunder in the near west from which this storm was heading.Wet and dripping and hoping my phone, camera and notebook are not, I turned left at Dreamy Draw…

Urban Bike: Giant Coffee in Midtown Phoenix

A cycling trip to the newly opened Giant Coffee near the Phoenix Art Museumurban biking in phoenix, giant coffeephotos: artur ciesielski

Giant Coffee just opened recently and I've had several chances to have some coffee there and lounge around: once by car and twice by bike.

I like the bike part better because it just feels right to ride up to this modern contemporary building lay the bike against the wall along the the many others and walk into the fully opened front while fuses the interior and exterior space together.

It's the openness and fairly nice interior that make this place quite pleasant to be in: it's got the looks and feel of a truly great place: add to that friendly service and good, not great, coffee.  The coffee could be better, but it's acceptable especially

Urban Bike: Breakfast in Verde in Downtown Phoenix

Sunday, May 9th, 2010 at 3:37pm. 101 Views, 0 Comments.

A good reward for a long bike ride at Verde. After a fairly horrific early Saturday when it seemed the world and life made no sense, Sunday came around and it was cycling time and just in time.  Saturday night was awesome and that's when we saw Verde Fine Food Fast and that gave me an excuse to do another Urban Bike and something to write about. Check out the fast paced video below.

The trip Sunday took me from North Phoenix past the Phoenix Mountains down Dreamy Draw.  Just south of Glendale once of the canal I met a couple who were asking for some directions, their bikes packed solid and bulging out with packages.  They were headed from Florida to San Diego on bikes, now into day 63 of the journey.  That's something I'd love to do and

Jane's Walk Phoenix 2010: Warehouse District

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 at 11:20am. 102 Views, 0 Comments.

A walk through the historic warehouse district in Phoenix with the intention to learn, see and preserve the character and history of Phoenix. At the recent Radiate Phoenix meeting held at St. Francis restaurant I learned about Jane Jacobs and the Phoenix iteration of Jane's Walk Phoenix, created and organized by Yuri Artibise, also an avid urbanist and someone that puts the pedal to the metal when it comes to promoting urban renewal and preservation. This year's walk was in the Warehouse District in Phoenix, an area composed of an eclectic group of restaurants, bars, warehouses, and residential properties just south of Downtown Phoenix and 3-4 blocks south and I-51 to 19th Ave.There is already a reason to go there: the restaurants and other…

Greater Phoenix Bike MonthYou may be seeing more cyclists around the valley in April.  Not only because the two wheel mode of transportation is picking up steam, but also because April is 'Valley Bike Month', a month of activities and promotion of the two wheel rides.  What's in store are fun rides, races, expos and other events noted below, but visit the Valley Metro site for full details on each.

I probably won't have the time to take part in all these, but you may see me on the urban streets of Phoenix: take a look at our Urban Bike Series for some of the adventures in urban cycling.

Urban Bike: Phoenix Night Rider

Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at 10:00pm. 150 Views, 0 Comments.

Cycling in Central Phoenix on the cool late winter evenings.downtown phoenix by night

The crisp air bites the skin, probably the last until next fall: the cool air brings tears to the eyes as the buildings, benches, singes, posts, rocks, sand whiz by as the tires quickly roll along the rough sidewalk of Central Avenue.

Rocks crunch: ladies punch and screem, as I roll right behind them unexpectedly: the dog barks, the cat scuttles away, the car honks, as I cross the street across 5 lanes feeling the bumps, white, white, yellow, yellow, white, white: a short flight up a curb onto the next sidewalk, between the hedges to a bumpy ride on the cobbled sidewalk of Rancho Solano.  South on Central: stop, ding, ding the train rolls by on the light rail.

Time for a coffee at Lux.
