Historic Preservation of Scottsdale and Property Owner's Rights

Scottsdale's citizens discuss historic presevation and values

Scottsdale is in a worthwhile discussion about historic preservation.  Several years have passed since steps were taken to preserve post war Scottsdale.  There are many pros to historic preservation but can there be negatives.  Some argue that values in historic neighborhoods will decrease.  If, as a result of city of Scottsdale's actions a property owners property value decreases, that owner has the right to sue the city.  This is the problem for moving forward with Scottsdale's preservation.  In Phoenix many areas have benefited by historic preservation and values have gone up and even skyrocketed but there are pockets of historic neighborhoods that have been hurt.  Those hurt are homes that just don't meet today's resident's needs.  They are neither good living spaces nor can they be transformed because of the limitations on structures in historic neighborhoods.  Those spaces can be transformed but with great effort.  As the city grows it needs to preserve its limited history in order to save its character.  If we don't we may regret it in the future.
