Light Rail is coming to Phoenix

Phoenix residents will be able to enjoy the ease and convenience of the new metro light rail starting in 2008.

The new METRO light rail will be a regional light rail transit system committed to excellence, safety, and value. The rail will enhance the quality of life for all who live and visit the Phoenix community. The new system will be powered by electricity on overhead wires, and will be very quiet, generating very little noise.  The light rail train operates at street level in its own lane separated from other traffic. It will be faster than the local bus system and will actually travel at the same speed as cars. Light rail vehicles can carry approximately 200 people and can be linked with up to three other cars to carry up to 600 people at a time. Eventually, the system will transport up to 15,000 people an hour. Here are 6 simple safety tips for riding the light rail.

-Always stand behind the designated area on the platform while waiting for the light rail.
-Cross tracks only in designated areas.
-Keep children away from the tracks until the train stops completely.
-Let other passengers to exit the train before you board.
-Avoid sticking arms or legs in closing doors.
-Skateboarding, rollerblading and riding bikes is not permitted on the platform.

Starting in December 2008 the light rail will will connect Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Glendale and other outlying communities.
