Cycling the streets of Phoenix is an awakening where the nuances of each neighborhood come to light; riding is unlike any trip in a car and you get to notice some very unusual stuff. Though Phoenix is a new city it's still filled with the names of the old, ancient and exotic; there is Camelback mountain and Mummy Mountain hearkening to the exploration of Egypt and there are the other influences like the name for the Arcadia neighborhood or the Italian river Rubicon, after which, probably, the street in Arcadia is named. "Crossing the Rubicon" is a popular idiom meaning to go past a point of no return and refers to Julius Caesar crossing the river in 49 BC deliberately as an act of war." In the case of Arcadia there was no war and the only thing being crossed besides the street was an irrigation water tower from the Arcadia Water Company. | | | |
