The first historic neighborhood in Phoenix is an urban paradise of beautiful architecture, culture and food.

The Roosevelt District in downtown Phoenix was the first neighborhood to receive a Historic designation: this happened in 1985. The District has distinct boundaries by they are rough, especially on the southern end where the historic meanders in and our of the not historic. See a more detailed view of the boundaries on the map. They are roughly: McDowell to Van Buren and Central to 7th Avenue. Roosevelt is a former "trolley neighborhood" from 1895 to 1930 (see the Phoenix Trolley website): this is the reason for the narrow and deep shape to the lots. Now, again the neighborhood is close to two light rail stops.
A trip through the neighborhood will renewal many quite striking historic homes from the revival period: these include, Craftsman Bungalow, Mission, Spanish, Provincial and English Cottage revival homes plus a few rare Prairie style homes. On the southern end there are several multifamily properties.
Throughout the history it's been a community of distinction and distinct residents and remains so: this is quite obvious when you see the selection of very stately homes dotted throughout.
The advent of urban living and the increasing destiny and popularity of downtown Phoenix has brought back a very vibrant lifestyle. Many buildings have been renovated, there is First Fridays Artwalk, ASU downtown and many local businesses. Residents can walk to nearby dining, live theatre, entertainment, art museums, art galleries, sporting events, symphony, amongst others.
It's an eclectic mix of the new and the historic with beautiful condo projects like Portland Place and new town-homes hearkening back to old historic architecture like Isabella Court. There are stately home with wraparound porches, single story bungalows: beautiful craftsmanship and high quality materials are common: stained glass windows, hardwood floors, gables, stone chimneys, hand made brick amongst others.
Below is the current selection of homes for sale in Roosevelt. ...and check out the 34 other historic neighborhoods of Phoenix.
