The Phoenix valley is a perfect place for the melding of the indoors and outdoors.  When building a new home putting in a lean transition between the two is easier.  This is more common in more expensive luxury homes. 

In Central Phoenix were the housing stock is mostly older and built when this fusion of indoor and outdoor was not as popular the homes lack this feature, unless of course, they have been remodelled. 

Some homes like this one pictured below, in North Central Phoenix near the Phoenix mountains have a wall of sliding glass doors which opens onto an expansive lush green yard.

In good weather, which in Phoenix we have plenty of, the doors open up wide and the living room opens up onto the yard.
