Mid-century modern architecture is defined as homes from the mid 50's through the late 1960's with a simple clean architecture. There are buildings in the same vain built before and after this period.

A common but not exclusive characteristic is the use of post and beam engineering that eliminates large heavy walls and replaces them with lighter construction and lots of glass.

Shapes included curves, use of new materials, an optimistic view of living and construction.  It's the light and open architecture that most appealing in these homes.

This style translates well into contemporary living where the floor-plan is more open: walls are more apt to move: the shape accepts natural light and indoor outdoor living meld together. 

These homes, especially good example of mid-century modern home, are in demand.  Those designed by architects like Al Beadle or Ralph Haver tend to fetch a premium. 

It's rare for the home to be original or unlikely to be restored to originality.  They are meant to be updated to today's living standards and many have don that.  A perfect example of this is Marlen Grove in Central Phoenix where owners have each individualized their homes and many look spectacular.
