Idylwilde Park a Phoenix Historic District

Idylwilde's unique concept remains a staple: a three-acre park with usage and park ownership. The home's backyards border the park, shielding it from outsiders.

Idyllwild Park historic neighborhood

In 1928 Idylwilde Park, a new subdivision, was platted by Earl Webster and C.W. Stephenson.  In a competitive market the developers came up with an idea unlike any other in Phoenix.  The main selling point was to incorporate a large three acre park into the subdivision: further more the park was to be situated inside, surrounded by the backs of the homes: home owners not only own their small lots, but a share in the park: quite novel is it not?

The homes all loop on the outer edge of the park and there is an interior gravel road in-between the homes and the park.

The park is the main attraction.  It's is a secluded piece of nature in the midst of a dense city: separated, secluded and relatively safe, and probably a great place for kids to play or picnics.

The park is surrounded by a double row of Tamarisk trees: which is an unfortunate choice for this climate and they are not very pretty.

There are 4 main architectural styles: California Bungalow, National Style (one with Native American roots), Pueblo Revival and Spanish Eclectic.

It's quite a treat to walk the periphery of the Idylwilde: the homes have taken on the charms of the years gone by and some are quite unique indeed: no cookie cutter homes here.

Established as at historic district in June 1991 with a period of significance from 1928-1941.

Since the district is so small homes rarely come on the market.  If any do you will automatically see them below, otherwise none are available.
